Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS) is a free web-based distance learning program that is designed for large numbers
of geographically disperses students or an open online course is an aimed at unlimited participation and open access
via the web. In addition to traditional course material, such as lectures reading and many MOOCS provide interactive
courses with user forums or social media discussions to support community interactions among students, professors,
teaching assistance as well as immediate feedback to quick quizzes and assignments MOOCs are a widely researched
development in distance education, first introduced in 2008, that emerged as a popular mode of learning in 2012.
SWAYAM MOOCS platform is World's Largest Online Free E-Learning Platform Portal designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz. Access Equity and Quality by covering School/Vocational, Under Graduate, Post Graduate, Engineering and other professional courses including skill based courses to ensure that every student benefit from learning material through ICT. MOOCs Platform was developed indigenously by AICTE in 2016 to facilitate hosting of online courses, which could be accessed by anyone, anywhere at any time free of cost to achieve three cardinal principles of Education Policy.
Large numbers of students are learning in MOOCS offered by prestigious universities worldwide. A MOOC is a free, massive, open, online course, that allows unlimited participations some MOOCS can be relatively small in scale, while some can be quite large. The courses hosted on SWAYAM are in 4 quadrants - video lectures, specially prepared reading material that can be downloaded/printed, self-assessment test through tests and quizzes and an online discussion forum for clearing the doubts. Steps have been taken to enrich the learning experience by using audio-video and multimedia and state of the art pedagogy/technology.
Further it is submitted that MOOCS constitute one of the most innovative moments with in open learning and distance education. Through the MOOC constantly evolving and create new learning opportunities in higher education. However, there exist no consolidated approaches regarding the Sanskrit educational material development at the course implementation process Central Sanskrit University (hereinafter called CSU) is doing the work accordingly.
A training workshop on MOOCS was held at CSU, Ekalavya Campus, Agartala (Tripura) from 22-28 March, 2018 to develop lesson on MOOCS platform by teaching staff of all departments from various campuses. In this workshop, faculty members of campuses of CSU took part and benefited from this training workshop.
It is noteworthy that the Quality, one of the key elements of MOOCS, shall be monitored throughout the design, development and delivery cycle of the MOOCs. Quality shall be managed at the offering institution/MOOCS offering team level while creating the content. MOOCs cover many topics that are also taught at the university level. In general, most university subjects can be taught in a MOOC format. And practical skills for professional development are becoming important as well.
Pursuant to the D.O. F.No.1-8/2017 dated 3rd June and 28th June, 2022 of Secretary, UGC, Govt. of India regarding adoption of credit frame work for Online Learning Courses through Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds Under UGC Regulations-2021, the Central Sanskrit University has initiated to implement the SWAYAM MOOCS online learning courses.
Accordingly, Competent Authority of Central Sanskrit University has constituted an Academic Advisory Committee (AAC) vide notification dated 18-04-2022 to chalkout the possibilities for developing UGC-SWAYAM-MOOCS courses identify the courses for the large benefit of Sanskrit Scholars as well as the general public, in terms of the NEP 2020. Further, Central Sanskrit University has also adopted concerned course groups viz; NPTEL, IGNOU, CEC and ITMB.
MOOcs activities started in central Sanskrit university in 2017. Consequently, the Central Sanskrit University has issued letter to all its campuses for implementing the MOOCS-SWAYAM online learning courses and establishing NPTEL local chapter. Therefore, all campuses of Central Sanskrit University established NPTEL local chapter. In addition, the Central Sanskrit University has also instructed to its campuses for inviting Expression of Interest (E.O.I) for developing UG/ PG/ Certificate/ Diploma courses under MOOCS/SWAYAM though online application in accordance with the guidelines of UGC/SWAYAM-MOOCs – 2017 & 2021.
